I grew up on ranches in Nevada and Idaho, have lived in the West all my life, and I am drawn to harsh weather and austere landscapes.  I am interested in how we perceive this world and how we maintain a connection to the landscape.  Much of our perception is limited, and our experience with the land is sporadic; we see it in pieces through the windows of houses and the windows of cars as we pass by.  Over the years we put these perceptions together, the line of mountains against the sky, cloud formations, a rock along the river, a shadow in dense foliage.
